Each spring the Cal Alumni Association celebrates the University of California birthday — the anniversary of its founding — with a traditional banquet known as the Charter Gala. This year’s event took place April 24 in San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building. The 2010 award recipients include three alumni with Cal graduate degrees:

  • Carol Galante M.C.P. ’78, deputy assistant secretary for multifamily housing programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (Excellence in Achievement Award);
  • Gary Matkin M.B.A.’70, Ph.D. ’89, dean of continuing education at UC Irvine (Excellence in Achievement Award); and
  • Jill Duerr Berrick M.S.W. ’87, Ph.D. ’90, co-director of the Berkeley Center for Child and Youth Policy (Excellence in Service Award).
