Dear Graduate Community, It’s been quite a semester. Classwork and research took place along with actions to support our University’s core mission and values, and to improve our campus’s operations. In local, state, and national settings, students, faculty, and staff joined to advocate passionately for investing in public education as a common good in a good society. Among recent campus events was the nation-wide SAGE (Student Advocates for Graduate Education) summit hosted here by Berkeley’s own Graduate Assembly. For highlights, see this NewsCenter story. The winter break affords a chance to reflect and regroup. Did you know that one of Berkeley’s research centers and educational programs focuses on ‘living a meaningful life’? How can each of us do our work and conduct ourselves in ways that ‘foster a thriving, resilient, and compassionate society’? Food for thought is at their website. I join the talented, dedicated staff of the Graduate Division in wishing each and every one of you restorative holidays and a new year filled with promise. Andrew J. Szeri Dean of the Graduate Division
