MENTORS, MENTORS, EVERYWHERE — These are scenes from the last handful of years, showing ceremonies (and some surprise presentations) wherein faculty members have been honored for their exemplary and beyond-the-call-of-duty mentoring of graduate students. Three distinct series of awards are involved, two of which have been given at joint events since 2007; the other is sprung on unsuspecting recipients in carefully-orchestrated “ambushes.” The different awards are catalogued below, with their nomination deadline dates. All the recipients shown have been helping students, essentially behind the scenes, for years. The man in the blue shirt at top left is less familiar on campus, but is vital to this context; he’s George Sarlo,, namesake of one of this triad of honors, the Sarlo Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Awards.
