The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships provide funding to students to encourage the study of less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area and international studies. These fellowships are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education.

At UC Berkeley, funding for FLAS Fellowships is available from seven Title VI National Resource Centers representing various world areas: AfricaEast AsiaLatin AmericaMiddle EastSouth AsiaSoutheast Asia, and Western Europe.

The purpose of the FLAS program is to promote the training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is essential. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The FLAS fellowship competition for Summer 2020 awards and Academic Year 2020–21 awards is now open. Fellowships are available for graduate students, and in some world areas, also for undergraduates.

The application deadline is Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Additional information about the FLAS Fellowship Program may be found at the Graduate Fellowships website
