Welcome back and happy new year! I hope that you are returning from the winter break refreshed and ready to take advantage of the opportunities awaiting you this spring. All 11,000-plus graduate students are invited to the first-ever spring GradFest on the evening of February 7, from 5 to 7 pm in the Student Union’s Pauley Ballroom. Co-sponsored by the Graduate Assembly, Graduate Division, and ASUC LEAD Center, this is a two-hour resource and activities fair showcasing campus resources, student organizations, arts and crafts, meditation, yoga, and free food – followed by after-events at three off-campus venues. Bring a friend and learn more about what Berkeley can offer you outside of the classroom, library, and laboratory! February 19 is the deadline for submitting three-minute video entries for Berkeley’s Fourth Annual Grad Slam Competition, to be held on campus in April. I strongly recommend this professional-development opportunity to all engaged in research – whether in the humanities, social sciences, or STEM fields. You’ll sharpen your ability to explain your research concisely to a non-specialist audience and may earn cash prizes and media attention! Our information session on January 29 will answer questions, offer coaching, and provide inspiration. This monthly newsletter includes news, events, and perspectives relevant to graduate students at all phases of their careers here. I hope that you find it engaging and useful. With warm wishes for a productive semester, Fiona M. Doyle Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division
