Important information for grad students receiving fall fellowships at UC Berkeley Published: August 20, 2012 By: Dick Cortén 1. Registration All graduate students must be registered by the beginning of the semester and no later than the end of the third week of classes. To be considered registered, a student must be enrolled in at least one class, have no registration blocks, and have the first installment of fees paid. In addition, the Graduate Council requires that students not yet advanced to doctoral candidacy be registered and enrolled in at least 12 units. 2. Graduate Division Stipend Payments Students who are receiving fall fellowship stipends from the Graduate Division may expect their payments on August 25 (unless indicated differently in their award letter). Please note that the Graduate Division will not process stipend awards for students whose registration is incomplete. 3. Electronic Funds Transfer Graduate students are strongly encouraged to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Enrolling in EFT expedites receipt of funds and prevents checks from being mailed to the wrong address. Please sign up online. If you have previously authorized EFT, it will remain in effect. Note: EFT for fellowship stipend payments is separate from automatic payroll deposit for GSI/GSR positions. Each needs to be authorized separately. 4. International Students/GLACIER New international students who are receiving fellowship stipends (as well as continuing students who have yet to receive stipends in the 2012 calendar year) must complete tax forms. Stipend payments will be held until this process is completed. Departments initiate the process in GLACIER, which is a secure online tax-compliance system that the University uses to manage tax information for foreign nationals receiving payments from the campus. If you have any questions, please refer to the GLACIER web page or contact the Foreign Tax Analyst by email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
