R Data Wrangling and Manipulation

This R workshop will introduce tools (notably dplyr and tidyr) that makes data wrangling and manipulation much easier. Participants will learn how to use these packages to subset and reshape data sets, do calculations across groups of data, clean data, and other useful stuff. Preparing a résumé for Federal jobs is unlike creating one for jobs in the private and nonprofit sectors. To do so requires an understanding of the nuances of Federal hiring. We invite you to join a representative of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to learn strategies on developing and writing a Federal résumé. By the end of this session, you will know the importance of the résumé in applying for Federal Jobs and why preparing a thorough résumé is the single best step you can take towards obtaining Federal Government employment; gain critical tips and guidelines for improving your résumé; and learn how to use the USAJOBS Résumé Builder to create a new résumé. We'll cover visualization theory and plotting with Matplotlib and Seaborn, working through examples in a Jupyter (formerly IPython) notebook. The following plot types will be covered: line bar scatter boxplot We'll also learn about styles and customizing plots. Throughout the workshop, we'll discuss the plot types best suited for particular kinds of data. Basic familiarity with the Python programming language is assumed. New to Python? In this interactive workshop, participants will explore strategies for aligning these components to help students focus their learning on what matters most in your course and to ensure the accuracy of your assessments. Finding a match: Developing active learning approaches for any class

Ample evidence from research in education across disciplines has shown that actively engaging students in their learning process has numerous benefits. To facilitate engagement, instructors can incorporate a variety of active learning strategies into their teaching, from minute papers to case studies. Yet, with the extensive list of strategies available, how do we choose activities to best support student learning in our particular courses? In this interactive workshop, participants will collaboratively explore considerations for selecting active learning strategies for different teaching and learning goals. Participants will also consider logistics of implementation and ways to informally gauge the effectiveness of the approach in their course contexts. Maximizing Media Production for Student Engagement

How do we design media that fosters student engagement? What are evidence-based strategies for incorporating multiple kinds of media effectively? In this interactive workshop, participants will explore key elements and strategies for DIY audio and media production processes. Participants will discuss the role of pre-production (i.e., planning and preparation prior to recording) as an important component to developing engaging media content and consider its benefits and challenges. Participants will also engage with resources for maximizing digital media workflows for pre-production, production, and post-production.

R Bootcamp

The workshop will be an intensive two-day introduction to R using RStudio. After the first morning session, the workshop will (staffing permitting) be split into two separate tracks. Topics will include R basics - reading and manipulating data, working with R data objects, doing calculations, making plots programming in R doing statistics/data analysis/data science in R a brief intro to more advanced topics: efficiency, object-oriented programming, parallel processing in R
