BannerBeyond Academia, a student- and postdoc-run career education organization, is holding its second annual Careers Reception on April 25. The Careers Reception is a networking event designed to allow Ph.D.s and postdocs to talk to representatives of companies and organizations interested in hiring Ph.D. holders.

The event is an opportunity for students to get their résumés into the hands of employers with open positions. But it is also a chance to just ask questions and explore.

“The Careers Reception isn’t just for grad students getting ready to go on the job market,” says Alicia Roy, a co-director of Beyond Academia and a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in German. “It’s a great opportunity even for early-career grad students to see what kinds of jobs are out there, listen to what recruiters are looking for, and hear how more advanced grad students talk about their skills and goals.”

Attendance at the event is free, but requires a $5 RSVP fee which will be reimbursed upon check-in. Food and drinks will be provided to attendees for the duration of the event. Register here.

Careers to Explore

Beyond Academia has doubled the size of the Careers Reception since its inauguration last year. They have also expanded the range of companies at the event, based on feedback from previous attendees. This year’s employers are hiring for roles such as:

  • Data Scientists
  • Science Researchers
  • Curriculum Development
  • Management Consultants
  • Technical Consultants
  • Research and Design Engineers
  • Project Managers
  • Teachers
  • UI Designers
    and more

Many are hiring across their company for a variety of positions.

Format

The event opens with a panel discussion and is followed by a speed networking session. Beyond Academia will provide banquet tables to sit, eat, and converse with representatives, allowing for a more relaxed general discussion. During speed networking, attendees will be encouraged to change tables every 15 minutes in order to give everyone a chance to speak with popular companies, but to also encourage exploring other career avenues. After speed networking, there will be a general time to speak with representatives. There will also be private presentations by companies ongoing concurrently in a separate room.

Attendees are encouraged to submit a résumé before attending, and have the option of also submitting directly to companies and organizations they are interested in. Companies and representatives will be able to see all résumés and may contact participants if they are interested.
