If you are arriving at Cal as a new graduate student, my message to you is simple: you belong here and we are lucky to have you. As Dean of the Graduate Division, my top priority is supporting you as a whole person — and that means amplifying support and communication around basic needs, supporting your funding and financial aid journey, and ensuring you can access all the knowledge, resources and services available to graduate students. To those of you who are continuing your graduate work, I encourage you to bookmark the Graduate Division’s website and to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Our website and social channels will highlight teaching resources, fellowship deadlines, writing workshops, student wellness information, and professional development services that will provide guidance to you throughout your academic journey. I want to draw particular attention to three key events for new and continuing graduate students: New Graduate Student Orientation | August 27 I encourage all new graduate students to attend our New Graduate Student Orientation on Tuesday, August 27. We are offering panels and workshops throughout the day designed to answer your most pressing questions surrounding student health services, academic employment, establishing residency, and campuswide resources. If you have not already done so, please RSVP online. Graduate Student Town Hall | September 26 I am hosting a town hall on September 26 from 3:30-5:30 p.m., open to all Berkeley graduate students. My hope is that this open forum will cultivate a spirit of transparency around the challenges facing graduate students on campus and opportunities for improvement. Please indicate your interest in attending by completing this form. We will circulate a registration link in early September. Reception for New Professional and Master’s Students | November 1 Chancellor Carol T. Christ and I are hosting a reception for new professional and master’s students at the Chancellor’s residence on November 1 from 4-6 p.m. Please join us! Kindly RSVP by September 25. I am new to my role as Vice Provost and Dean, but I have a long-standing relationship with Cal as a professor, student, and program director. My staff and I are here — in addition to your department’s staff and faculty — to work alongside you to improve your academic experience and well-being during your time at Berkeley. Fiat Lux, Lisa García Bedolla Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division
