Program Dates: December 7, 2020–January 15, 2021 Apply by November 23, 2020 Call for Applications The Graduate Division’s GSI Teaching and Resource Center is pleased to announce a call for Graduate Remote Instruction Innovation Fellow applications. GRI Innovation Fellows will work to develop high-quality approaches for remote instruction for spring and summer 2021 courses. The program is intended for graduate students teaching discussion sections or stand-alone courses (e.g., Reading & Composition, studios, or foreign languages), and those GSIs who are assisting a faculty member in revising a course to be taught remotely in the spring or summer. In addition to helping graduate students learn skills that can be applied in spring or summer 2021 to enhance remote student learning on the Berkeley campus, this program will support graduate student professional development and will give them certification and skills that will enhance their teaching portfolios. The program will enable GSIs to design integrated lesson plans, learning activities, and courses for the remote environment driven by learning outcomes and principles of inclusion; make decisions about the best use of synchronous and asynchronous activities based on research on learning; design legitimate assignments and assessments appropriate for the course and learning context; come away with demonstrated skills in creating a bCourse site, modules, pages, quizzes, announcements, and a plan to use Zoom and bCourses for the purpose of community building and collaboration. As a GRI Innovation Fellow, individuals will engage in the following types of activities: Apply high-quality remote pedagogical approaches to a particular course; Work on bCourses course page set-up, including the creation of course resources, modules, and assignments best suited for a remote learning environment; Learn about best practices for providing student accommodations when instruction is remote; Learn about best practices for ensuring the values of equity and inclusion are integrated effectively into remote learning environments; Transition assessments to a remote format; and Develop activities to facilitate student-to-student and student-instructor interaction using bCourses and Zoom. GRI Innovation Fellows will be asked to share the outcomes of their work with the campus community and will be encouraged to develop their ideas into publications on educational methods. GRI Innovation Fellows will be expected to devote approximately 70 hours to the program from December 7, 2020 to January 15, 2021. This includes a one-week intensive seminar with synchronous and asynchronous components (December 7-11, 2020) on designing courses to enhance student learning in a remote environment. From December 14, 2020 to January 15, 2021, Fellows will work independently on the creation of course materials (in consultation with the Instructor of Record, as appropriate) and self-guided training. Each GRI Fellow will receive a stipend of $2,000 and a Certificate in Remote Instruction. Eligibility GRI Fellows must be continuing graduate students in good academic standing and scheduled to teach in spring or summer 2021. Students graduating in fall 2020 are not eligible. GRI Fellows must coordinate with and have the endorsement of the Instructor of Record for the spring or summer course in which they plan to serve as a GSI. A limited number of spaces may be available to students who are not teaching but who would like to prepare for remote teaching as future faculty members. Graduate students who were GRI Fellows in summer 2020 are not eligible to apply. Priority will be given to: Graduate students who are teaching remotely for the first time Graduate students teaching stand-alone courses (Reading & Composition, foreign languages, studios, remote labs) or courses for which they will be responsible for the course syllabus (e.g., a summer-session course) Graduate students assisting in the redesign of impacted courses and/or courses that are vital to degree progress and completion for a large number of students Later-stage graduate students (closer to completing their degrees and working to enhance their teaching portfolios).
