The career fair season is here. The Career Center has alerted campus advisers to the fall schedule. Hundreds of business, government, and nonprofit employers visit the Berkeley campus each year, and many are interested candidates with advanced degrees. Some career fairs and info sessions are for graduate students and Ph.D.s only. Here’s a quick summary of the fairs geared for grad students and recent Ph.D.s, all of which will held be in the Pauley Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union: September 21, 12 to 4 pm EECS Career Fair September 28, 12 to 4 pm Biotech /M.S., Ph.D. Career Fair November 2, 4 to 7 pm Civil and Environmental Engineering Career Fair More information on these events can be found via the Events tab on your Callisto desktop top menu. Select “Employer Information Sessions,” and click on the “M.S./Ph.D. Information Session” option found on the “Info Session Type” drop-down menu under the Graduate Students & Ph.D.s category. (Callisto is the exclusive gateway, for Cal students and alumni, to online Career Center services and event sign-ups.) Beyond the fairs, whether you’re interested in pursuing a career in academia or exploring the broad range of other professional options, the Career Center has workshops, events and online resources that can help you find job announcements, prepare your credentials, and bring you face to face with potential employers. Take a look under their Grad Student & Ph.D. Services heading, and consider signing up for one of their two Ph.D. CareerMail lists. If you’re not sure what you want to do after grad school, Ph.D. advisors Debra Behrens and Andrew Green can provide counseling and assessments that will help you in that decision-making process. (They’re both UC alumni, Debra from UCSB and Andrew from Berkeley, where he earned a Ph.D. in political science in 1993).
