Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! As you start planning for what’s next, we want to make sure you are aware of your post-graduation options for health insurance. In order to help you with these options and deadlines, we’ve pulled together some Post-Graduation Insurance Tips.
Please note, SHIP is only available to registered students, dependents, and those on Filing Fee. When your SHIP term ends (December 31 for Fall term and July 31 for Spring term), you become eligible for a special 60-day period to enroll in Covered California or Medi-Cal. The ending of SHIP is considered a qualifying event that opens a special enrollment period for you on Covered California. If you miss this enrollment window, you may have to wait for the Open Enrollment period (typically around October each year) or for another qualifying event (e.g. moving to a new county, significant salary change, etc. — see the Covered California website below for more details).
In addition to the resources above, you can learn more about your options on Covered California and Medi-Cal or find an insurance navigator to assist you with Covered California, by visiting the Covered California site (link is external). If you are leaving California, you can check out healthcare.gov to get connected to the appropriate state-based health insurance resource.
