Program Proposals and Options

All graduate degree, certificate, or designated emphasis proposals begin with a preliminary review by the Graduate Division in preparation for the first step in the graduate program approval process with the Graduate Council.

You must have successfully completed at least two semesters of graduate study in a doctoral program at Berkeley. You will need five faculty from multiple departments to support your proposal, and will need to show that the project you propose cannot be completed in any existing doctoral program.

With the UC System Intercampus Exchange, a graduate student registered on any campus of the University of California may go to another campus of the University as an Intercampus Exchange Graduate Student with approvals from the student’s advisor, chair of the department on the host campus, and deans of the Graduate Division on the home and host campus. With the Stanford-Berkeley Exchange Program, a graduate student with a superior academic record may participate in the Stanford-Berkeley Exchange Program and take a limited number of courses that are offered at Stanford but not at Berkeley. Read more

With the Exchange Scholar Program, doctoral students who have completed at least one year of study in a Berkeley graduate degree program may apply to study at a participating institution, including Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale.
