Apply to the Firebaugh Scholars Undergraduate Research Program

The Marco Antonio Firebaugh Scholars Program is open to all undergraduate students, including historically excluded, underrepresented, undocumented, foster youth, formerly incarcerated, and system-impacted students, and other UC Berkeley undergraduates.

We are excited to share the Marco Antonio Firebaugh Scholars Program and the George A. Miller Scholars Program are partnering to create a collaborative cohort of research scholars!

The Marco Antonio Firebaugh Scholars Program provides outstanding students with opportunities to strengthen their leadership, research, and community engagement skills through hands-on experiences and mentorship. Each year, we select students based on their leadership potential, academic achievement, and commitment to community service and education. 

As part of a close-knit scholarly community, Miller and Firebaugh Scholars participate in the program for two years, receiving individualized guidance and support to help them successfully transition to UC Berkeley, thrive academically, and build skills for long-term personal and professional success.

Research Track

Millers and Firebaugh Scholars select one of two tracks: Academic research grounded in a problem of practice or a community service research.

Year One

Build academic, research, and leadership skills during a weekly credit-bearing course. Forge community with fellow Miller and Firebaugh Scholars. Develop a research or service project prospectus under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Summer after Year One:

Focus on conducting research or performing community service work, culminating in the completion of a research or service project. Participate in a summer seminar to support project development. Present findings to the incoming Miller and Firebaugh Scholars cohort.

Year Two:

Receive support and guidance with graduate and professional school preparation and career development.

The Millers and Firebaugh Scholars selection process requires at least a letter of recommendation from a mentor, teacher, instructor, GSI, or counselor that addresses academic preparation and educational goals and/or community service experience of the candidate

Please note, if you are awarded more than one UC-Berkeley research opportunity, such as the Haas Scholars Undergraduate Research Program, you are only allowed to receive one research stipend per year. If you are offered and accept more than one research program, we can only award you one of these stipends
