Overview

Our two-year Master of Journalism (M.J.) program is a leading professional degree designed to train the next generation of diverse, courageous, innovative, and technologically skilled reporters. Located in the heart of the vibrant Bay Area—just steps from San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Napa—our students report from one of the most dynamic news environments in the world. Our curriculum pairs hands-on craft training with deep intellectual rigor, preparing you to lead investigations, break critical stories, and launch a high-powered career. From day one, you’ll gain real-world reporting experience, complete a 300-hour paid summer internship, and build an ambitious portfolio of published work—graduating ready to hold power accountable, tell the stories that matter most, and drive real change.

Rooted in UC Berkeley’s core community principles, our culture proves that high-stakes reporting and a compassionate, inclusive community belong together. We are deeply committed to fostering a supportive environment where diverse voices thrive and drive the future of news. Through small, mentor-led classes guided by award-winning faculty and an active professional network, you will join a global community of alums who aren’t just shaping the industry—they are leading it. Concurrent degree programs in Public Health and Asian Studies are also available.
