Overview

If you are passionate about the cultural, political, and economic landscapes of Asia, UC Berkeley offers a unique concurrent Master of Journalism (MJ) and Master of Arts (MA) in Asian Studies.

Offered jointly by UC Berkeley Journalism and the Asian Studies Graduate Group, this accelerated path allows you to earn two two-year degrees in just three years—saving a full year of study and tuition.

This program trains regional experts to become impactful multimedia communicators and equips journalists with the linguistic, historical, and cultural foundation needed to cover global issues with precision. You will customize a cross-disciplinary curriculum focused on East Asia, South Asia, or Southeast Asia while sharpening your multimedia reporting skills. Because the program demands a deep understanding of the region, language proficiency is required.

To apply, complete a single UC Berkeley Graduate Admissions Application and select the MJ/MA concurrent degree option for joint review by both programs.
