Architecture MArch

Overview

The department offers an accredited professional Master of Architecture (MArch), Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. We foreground architecture as an instrument of change across all our degree programs. Our faculty share an attitude of “critical optimism” — criticality towards established norms and practices and optimism in the belief that innovative forms of architectural design, teaching and research will lead to decarbonized and just futures.

Master of Architecture (MArch)
The Master of Architecture program is designed to provide students seeking an accredited professional degree in architecture with a comprehensive and challenging education leading to practice. The program is centered around the design studio and enriched by courses in building science and technology, sustainability and history, theory, and society. MArch students work closely with classmates and professors in our light-filled open-plan studio to develop and represent their design ideas, and are encouraged to identify their own creative and research passions.

Design is the core of the curriculum, and students enroll in an architectural design studio each semester. Working collaboratively with their cohort in design studios, students learn how to create architecture that serves both communities and the environment over the long term.

We offer two tracks leading to the MArch degree, a two-year track and a three-year track, depending on previous educational experience and the recommendation of the admissions committee. More details about eligibility for each track can be found on our webpage.

Berkeley’s MArch is a NAAB-accredited and STEM designated full-time residential degree program.
