Today the City of Berkeley, and communities far and wide, are reeling from a tragic accident, near our campus, that has taken the lives of six visiting young people and gravely injured several others.

Many of these visiting students, in a longstanding tradition of international exchanges, came from Ireland to work in the Bay Area during the summer; one victim is reported to be from Sonoma County.

Although we understand that none of them were studying at Berkeley, everyone in our academic community understands the tragedy of vibrant lives, so full of hopes and dreams, being cut short so suddenly.

Our campus has stepped up to offer outreach and support services to anyone who might be in need. The Dean of Students Office has compiled a list of crisis resources.

We share in the collective shock and grief at this terrible loss. On behalf of all of you, I offer heartfelt sympathies to the families, friends and loved ones of all those affected.

Sincerely,
