Overview

Overview
If you are passionate about diving deep into the cultural, political, and economic landscapes of Asia, UC Berkeley offers a unique collaborative path: a concurrent Master of Journalism (MJ) and Master of Arts (MA) in Asian Studies.
By combining the resources of UC Berkeley Journalism and the UC Berkeley Asian Studies Graduate Group, this accelerated program allows you to complete two rigorous two-year degrees in just three years—saving you a full year of study.
Our mission is to train regional experts to become impactful multimedia communicators, and to equip journalists with the deep linguistic, historical, and cultural foundations needed to cover global issues with precision. As a student here, you will customize a cross-disciplinary academic plan while masterfully sharpening your reporting and multimedia skills across your chosen geographic focus in East Asia, South Asia, or Southeast Asia.
Note: Because this program demands a nuanced understanding of the region, language proficiency is required as part of your course of study.
