Overview
The concurrent Master of Architecture and Master of City Planning (MArch/MCP) program prepares students to shape the built environment across scales: from individual buildings and public spaces to neighborhoods, cities, and regions. Combining Berkeley’s design-centered architectural education with advanced study in planning, policy, and urban development, the program equips students to address the complex social, environmental, and spatial challenges facing communities today.
Students develop a strong foundation in architectural design through Berkeley’s rigorous studio curriculum while building expertise in planning theory, urban economics, housing, transportation, community development, and environmental planning. The concurrent degree encourages students to connect creative design practice with the policies, institutions, and public processes that influence how cities grow and change.
Rooted in Berkeley’s longstanding tradition of interdisciplinary environmental design, the MArch/MCP program prepares graduates to lead collaborative efforts that advance more equitable, sustainable, and resilient futures. Graduates pursue careers in urban design, planning, public policy, housing and community development, real estate and development, and other fields that benefit from expertise in both architecture and planning.
