Overview

The MArch/MS SEMM concurrent degree is designed for students who want to work at the intersection of architectural design and structural engineering. Whether you are an architecture student drawn to the technical and structural dimensions of design or an engineer inspired by architecture’s creative possibilities, the program brings together Berkeley’s internationally recognized strengths in both fields. Students develop the creative and technical expertise needed to shape the future of the built environment through an integrated understanding of design, structure, materials, and construction.

Through the concurrent degree, students explore how structural systems influence architectural form, how material and construction choices expand design possibilities, and how engineering innovation can support ambitious architectural ideas. The program combines Berkeley’s design-centered architectural curriculum with advanced study in structural analysis, mechanics, materials, computational methods, and seismic design. Working across disciplines, students learn to navigate both the conceptual and technical dimensions of building design while developing the ability to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, fabricators, and builders.

Interdisciplinary courses across MArch and MS SEMM degrees uniquely prepare graduating students to bridge the traditional divide between architecture and engineering.
