Last month, UC Berkeley hosted the 29th annual meeting of the Graduate Career Consortium (GCC) — the nation’s largest gathering of professionals charged with providing career and professional development services to graduate students, PhDs and postdocs. The two and one-half day event was opened by Professor Fiona Doyle, Dean of the Graduate Division, and featured nationally renowned speakers such as Dr. Terrell Strayhorn (The Ohio State University), Dr. Peter Fiske (UC Berkeley and PAX Water Technologies), and Dave Evans (Stanford University). Interest and funding for PhD/postdoc services have grown significantly in recent years. This year’s meeting, with 187 attendees from 144 American and Canadian universities, was the largest in the history of the GCC. Current membership includes a broad swathe of North American universities, ranging from top-ranked private and public research universities to an array of land grant institutions, and other specialized research entities. The conference – whose themes were data, diversity, and professional development – was a collaboration between the Career Center and the Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs (VSPA) office and was co-hosted by Sam Castaneda and Andrew Green.
