We’ll be saying more, in detail and with pictures, in the near future, but meanwhile here are the categories — at least those which fall under the umbrella of the Graduate Division (and, in one case, its partner, the Graduate Assembly). The Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award, given by the Graduate Division’s GSI Teaching and Resource Center and the Graduate Council’s Advisory Committee for GSI Affairs. Hundreds of GSIs were honored, out of the thousands who teach at Berkeley each semester; the names of the many winners will be posted on the GSI Center’s website. The Teaching Effectiveness Award, also given by the GSI Center and the Advisory Committee for GSI Affairs, presented to a subset of the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award winners whose innovative methods have enhanced the ways their students learn. The Sarlo Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Awards, presented by the Graduate Division and sponsored by a grant from the Sarlo Foundation, a supporting organization of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. The Sarlo Awards were given in what has now become a traditional joint ceremony with the Graduate Assembly’s Faculty Mentor Awards. The Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of GSIs, given by the Graduate Division’s GSI Teaching and Resource Center and the Graduate Council’s Advisory Committee for GSI Affairs. (The Graduate Council, which guides the Graduate Division, is a committee of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate.) In the last few years, these awards have been a complete surprise to each recipient, during a class or other such presentation opportunity.
