Fiona M. Doyle, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate DivisionMay is a month for recognizing student achievements on many fronts. Through our Outstanding GSI Awards and Teaching Effectiveness Awards, the Graduate Division recently recognized and celebrated the talent and dedication of dozens of exceptional graduate students who assist faculty and hone their teaching skills in our classes, while having a huge impact on Berkeley’s undergraduates.

A major honor was brought home to Berkeley by our campus contestant in the 2018 Grad Slam on May 4, when graduate students from all ten UC campuses showcased their ability to make complex research accessible to general audiences. Environmental Engineering doctoral student Joe Charbonnet was awarded the first place ‘Slammy’ for his snappy three-minute talk on stormwater treatment. Broadening the impact of this annual contest, dozens of Berkeley graduate students sharpened their communication and presentation skills in preliminary rounds of our campus competition earlier this spring.

For some of you, this month’s culminating achievement is graduating with your degree in hand. To all who are completing your work here as students, I extend my hearty congratulations and best wishes for success in your chosen paths! Please remember the faculty and staff who look forward to your keeping in touch as your future unfolds.

For those of you who will be continuing your studies or research this summer – or taking a bit of time off to refresh – I urge you to prepare in advance for any travels abroad. While in the Bay Area, do take advantage of the natural and cultural riches at your doorstep. I wish all of you a wonderful summer!

With warm regards,
