Applying to Graduate School at UC Berkeley: Your Quick Guide to Requirements
Is the GRE Required?
The answer depends entirely on your program of interest. Certain graduate programs still require the GRE General Test, a GRE Subject Test, the GMAT, or the MCAT.
Because policies are set at the program level, you should not rely on guesswork or what other universities require.
Evidence of English Language Proficiency
If you received your degree from an institution outside the U.S. where English is not the primary language, you must submit official proof of English proficiency.
- Accepted Exams: Only the official TOEFL (iBT or iBT Home Edition) or IELTS (Academic Modules or IELTS Online) are accepted.
- Not Accepted: UC Berkeley does not accept Duolingo, TOEFL ITP, MyBest Scores, or IELTS Indicator exams.
For Fall 2027 admissions, UC Berkeley has updated its minimum English language proficiency score requirements.
