Possible card-skimming scam inspires local caution Published: April 6, 2010 By: Dick Cortén A small wave of credit/debit card fraud has impacted UC students, among others in Berkeley, during the last few weeks, around the spring break interval. Criminals known as skimmers may have attached a small electronic reader to machines that accept bank cards (ATMS, gas pumps and the like) to steal card information. Please carefully check your recent credit and debit card statements and encourage your friends to do the same. If you find are a victim, please get in touch with the City of Berkeley Police Department. Your information could help locate the common source(s) of theft. A report takes only a few minutes. Contact Detective Melero or Officer Mah by email or phone (510-981-5900).
