Overview
Fellowship Description:
The Graduate Division’s Graduate Writing Center and GSI Teaching & Resource Center support the professional development of graduate students and help them prepare for future careers. One of our signature programs is the Summer Institute for Preparing Future Faculty and its core course, From Graduate Student to Faculty Member (https://gsi.berkeley.edu/programs-services/workshops-seminars-institutes/summer-institute/). This program has been in abeyance since the pandemic, and our goal this year is to retool the program for its new launch in June 2027 with the assistance of a TBB fellow.
Project Activities
The Fellow will assist with the following:
1. Updating readings on topics such as
- The history of higher education, with an emphasis on the recent past and current trends
- The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and its recent revisions;
- The faculty review process at community colleges, liberal arts colleges, master’s granting institutions, and research universities
- Applying for faculty positions at community colleges, liberal arts colleges, master’s granting institutions, and research universities
- The life and professional experiences of a new faculty member.
2. Updating an alumni database of former Summer Institute Fellows
3. Selecting and contacting faculty panelists
4. Updating application form and reviewing applications
5. Creating and implementing a program evaluation tool
6. Synthesizing data and writing a report on program outcomes
Learning Outcomes and Skill Enhancement:
This project would be ideal for a doctoral student who aspires to be a future faculty member. The student will
- deepen their knowledge of the topics listed under task 1 above
- strengthen communication skills with faculty and university administrators
- develop skills in project management and program evaluation
- gain knowledge of the role of Berkeley’s Graduate Division and the various offices involved with supporting graduate students.
