Fellowship Description:
The Latinxs and the Environment Program provides undergraduate students with paid research opportunities, with an emphasis on helping students who have little to no experience conducting research. As a program, our goal is to demystify research and higher education opportunities. L&E Graduate Student Mentors will help support these undergraduate students as they set out to achieve their research goals. Undergraduate students learn new research skills; complete research papers, posters, presentations, social media projects, and other research formats; present their findings at a research conference hosted by L&E on April 24th, 2027; and submit a final research poster. Undergraduate students meet with their Mentor every other Tuesday from 5pm-7pm.
About the Role:
The Graduate Team is made up of five Graduate Student Mentors and one Graduate Student Lead. Each graduate mentor is paired with three undergraduate mentee students, and they will meet as a group every two weeks to go over their research project progress. On the off weeks that there are no group mentor meetings, mentors are responsible for hosting office hours for their students.
The Graduate Mentor will meet once a month with the entire fellowship team, where they will check in with their peers and Lead to ensure that they have a space to troubleshoot ideas and seek guidance regarding any mentee conflicts that may arise.
Aside from providing mentorship for their mentees, mentors are given the opportunity to learn how to become a research lead, as mentee group meetings are treated as “Lab Meetings.” Graduate mentors are given the opportunity to gain leadership skills, and are encouraged to use their current academic research projects as a resource/starting point for their mentee’s research.
Learning Outcomes and Skill Enhancement:
The learning outcomes for the Graduate Mentor:
- Develop their facilitation skills by facilitating one Research Fellowship Workshop per semester. Workshops are for 15 undergraduate fellows to learn about different research methods and skills.
- Develop conflict-resolution and communication skills by mentoring undergraduate students, ensuring that students are on track to completing their projects, and communicating in a timely manner with professional staff when issues arise.
- Develop leadership skills by leading bi-weekly group meetings with their mentees. Mentors create agendas, timelines and check in questions for their group meetings.
