3:00 PM - 5:00 PM R SQL Fundamentals April 28 @ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM R SQL Fundamentals In this workshop, we provide an introduction to using SQL to query and retrieve data from relational databases in R. First, we’ll cover what relational databases and SQL are. Then, we’ll use different packages in R to navigate relational databases using SQL. SQL is a viable option for anyone working with a large dataset. For this reason, SQL is a must-skill if you intend to work with big data or data-intensive organizations. The workshop aims to demonstrate that SQL is easy to learn, if you already know how to use the dplyr package in R. This will be a very hands-on workshop, with live coding. After this workshop, you will be able to: Explain what a relational database is and why we would want to use it. Access and query a database using SQL. Use DBI and dbplyr to query data from a relational database.

Prior to this role, Venkatesh taught in Stanford’s Life Design Lab and was the Assistant Dean of Career Education for PhDs and Postdocs. Urmila is dedicated to helping students find meaningful careers in and beyond academia by identifying and showcasing the transferable lifelong skills and knowledge gained from their academic training, extracurricular pursuits, and life experiences of all kinds. Venkatesh holds a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of California Berkeley and a Master’s in Fine Arts from the University of Michigan.

Speaker bio: Dr. Sheila Teves is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Mechanisms of Gene Regulation at the University of British Columbia. She received her PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle, and during her postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley, she studied how transcription programs are maintained and regulated during the cell cycle, using genomics and super resolution single molecule imaging. In July 2018, Dr. Teves started her own group at the University of British Columbia, combining diverse techniques such as genomics and single molecule imaging to address basic biological questions on transcription regulation, chromatin biology, and cell identity.
