NCFDD 14-Day Writing Challenge [Deadline to Apply]

See organizers' website for details. The 14-Day Challenge is an opportunity for you to experiment with daily writing, online community, and supportive accountability. It's very simple: You commit to write every day for at least 30 minutes. At the beginning of your writing time, you login to our online community, start the timer, complete your writing, and post your progress at the end. You take 5 minutes to support other writers in your group by commenting on their progress. This is NOT for you if: 1) you don't want to post your progress on a daily basis and/or 2) you don't want to interact with other people. If you're up for the challenge, then we can't wait for you to join us!

Data Science Coast-to-Coast: Robotics and Human-Computer Interaction [Berkeley Institute for Data Science]

See organizers' website for details. The Data Science Coast to Coast (DS C2C) seminar series is hosted jointly by seven academic data science institutes — BIDS, NYU’s Center for Data Science, Rice University’s Ken Kennedy Institute, Stanford Data Science, the University of Michigan’s Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS), and the University of Washington’s eScience Institute, and Johns Hopkins University's Institute of Data Intensive Engineering and Science (IDIES) — to provide a unique opportunity to foster a broad-reaching data science community. In the first half of 2021, DS C2C will host five seminars, each featuring one faculty member and one postdoctoral fellow from two universities. Each speaker will give a 20-minute talk about ongoing projects and motivating issues, followed by 20 minutes of discussion with the audience. These seminars will be the launching point for follow-on research discussion meetings that will hopefully lead to fruitful collaborative research.

Finding Health Statistics and Data [D-Lab]

See organizers' website for details. We will look at tools that let you create custom tables of vital statistics (birth, death, etc.), disease statistics, health behavior statistics, and more. The focus will be on U.S. statistics, but sources of non-U.S. statistics will be covered as well.

Career Lab: Interviewing Skills [QB3]

See organizers' website for details. Please note: QB3-Berkeley programs aim to support bioscientists, however other doctoral students may find content relevant for their professional development.  This career lab will discuss the basics of interview preparation and tips for success during the interview phase for all types of jobs. You do not need to be currently on the job market to benefit from participating in this event; you will gain insights into interviewing dynamics and strategies for preparation that can serve you in the future. PLUS, learn about campus resources such as Handshake and BigInterview that can help you successfully connect with potential employers. Interactive career labs will start with a 30-40 minute topic overview and discussion, then participants will have the opportunity to work on their own materials/skills in peer-to-peer pairs or small groups.
