Women in Data Science Berkeley 2021 [Berkeley Institute for Data Science]

WiDS Berkeley 2021, a series of livestreamed events celebrating Women in Data Science at UC Berkeley, will feature programming connected to the WiDS Worldwide 2021 conference on March 8, and live, virtual programming throughout the week highlighting distinguished scholars and practitioners from Berkeley and across the Bay Area. The event will bring together data scientists and professionals in adjacent fields from around the globe to discuss the latest research and applications of data science in a broad set of domains. Participants will learn how leading-edge companies are leveraging data science for success, with opportunities to connect with potential mentors, collaborators, and others in the field. WiDS Berkeley 2021 is sponsored by D-Lab; the Division of Computing, Data Science and Society; Research IT; Research, Teaching, and Learning; the School of Information; and the UC Berkeley Library.

2021 Diversity Career & Internship Fair [Career Center]

The Cal Career Center is pleased to invite you to attend the virtual 2021 Diversity Career & Internship Fair. Join us for the 2021 Diversity Career & Internship Fair which is co-sponsored by the UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (CLAA) and the Career Center. More than 60 employers expected, representing a wide variety of industries! Recruiting all majors and degree levels! Recruiters across industries, with a particular interest in enhancing the diversity of their workforce will bring information about their entry-level career, fellowship and internship positions. Students of color may also register for the Diversity Summit, featuring career development programming, and held virtually via Zoom on Friday, March 5, 2021, 1-5pm PST. Look for the event details and Zoom link on Handshake.   Scholarship drawing: a drawing for at least six (6) $250 scholarships will be held. Students who attend and participate in both the Diversity Summit (March 5, 1-5pm PST) and the Diversity Career & Internship Fair double their chances of being awarded a scholarship. This fair is open only to currently-enrolled UC Berkeley students and eligible alumni (less than five years past graduation with an active Handshake account). All majors and degree levels are welcome to attend. IMPORTANT NOTES: Register for the fair! To participate in 1:1 and group sessions with employers, you must be registered Advance sign up for 1:1 and group sessions with employers is highly recommended to secure your spot (day-of sign ups may be available, but the most popular slots may already be filled) CHECK AVAILABLE SESSIONS FREQUENTLY - Employers add sessions up to and including the day of the fair. If you don’t see open sessions with an employer of interest, select the “follow” button to be notified when they set their schedule. Make sure your Handshake profile is up-to-date and complete! Employers have the ability to set student qualifications for their 1:1 sessions. So, for example, if your GPA is missing, you may not be able to see some employer schedules! Student Registration Opens: Wednesday, March 3, 9AM.

Introduction to Bash + Github [D-Lab]

An introduction to programming basics in Bash and GitHub that are often assumed, but that you might have never had good instruction on! The first half of this workshop will introduce you navigating your computer’s filesystem and basic Bash commands to remove the fear of working with the command line to give you the confidence to use it to increase your productivity. The second half of this workshop will introduce you to Git, a powerful tool for keeping track of changes you make to the files in a project. You can use it to synchronize your work across computers, collaborate with others, and even deploy applications to the cloud. In this workshop, you will learn the basics to understand and use Git, including working with the popular "social coding" website, GitHub.
