2:00 PM - 4:00 PM UC Berkeley Graduate Admissions Institute: Rubric Improvement Workshop November 4, 2021 @ 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM UC Berkeley Graduate Admissions Institute: Rubric Improvement Workshop The UC Berkeley Graduate Admissions Institute aims to provide information and resources to departments interested in diversifying their graduate student cohorts and promoting the values of equity, inclusion, justice and belonging across their academic programs. The Admissions Institute will host a series of virtual workshops on holistic graduate admissions to provide training and a forum for discussion on best practices for holistic and inclusive admissions at UC Berkeley and across the Academy more generally. The Admissions Institute will encourage all graduate admissions committees, including faculty, staff, and student members, to be represented at these workshops. Department or unit Faculty Equity Advisors, Chief Diversity Officers, or equivalent will also be welcome to attend. The admissions institute provides two main workshops and two supplementary workshops. Rubric Improvement Workshop November 4, 2021 from 3-5 p.m. This workshop will focus on working with departments to refine/improve their existing admissions rubrics. Participants will be asked to bring existing rubrics for review/improvement. Participants without an existing rubric will work to imagine what a rubric for their program can look like. 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Town Hall for Former Foster and Child Welfare System Impacted Youth Graduate Students November 16, 2021 @ 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Town Hall for Former Foster and Child Welfare System Impacted Youth Graduate Students The Town Hall is a 2.5 hour event welcoming Former Foster, and Child Welfare System impacted Youth Graduate students to share their needs with the Graduate Division. Hosts include: Lisa García Bedolla (Dean of the Graduate Division), Denzil Streete (Assistant Dean of Graduate Diversity), Diversity & Community Fellows (Academic Development Huddle), and Charly King Beavers, MA (Hope Scholars Director). Food will be provided! Campus access badge required. This event is focused around student schedules that may need to arrive late or leave early to accommodate classes or commitments. Sign-in will include the option for students to provide their email address for further follow up and communication. Definition Foster Youth and Child Welfare System Impacted: Former foster youth, Guardianship, Probationship, Adoption, Orphaned before the age of 18 Outcomes By holding this event and holding space for an open discussion, we aim to: Connect with Former Foster and Child Welfare System Impacted Youth Graduate students and hold the space for them to be in community. Listen to the needs of the community. Develop tangible action items to better serve the community and gain targeted financial support from the Graduate Division to enable these students to graduate. Mental Wellbeing We realize that this topic is an emotional one, and accordingly a mental health provider from the Tang Center will be on hand to provide immediate assistance, grounding techniques, and connection to further services should they be needed. We are excited to welcome Treajané Brown, MA (she/they), a mental health provider from the Tang Center whose specialty areas include: Black + QT identity, self and community-care, and pleasure centered wellness strategies. Graduate Applications in the Post-Pandemic Context November 18, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. COVID-19 has disrupted the experiences of undergraduates in their traditional preparation for graduate study. With particular attention to students from underrepresented backgrounds who may have not been able to engage in research experiences (such as summer REUs), this workshop will focus on working with programs in developing metrics to review applications within the context of the student’s access to resources and opportunities.
