Getting to Know the LEAD Center

Leadership, Engagement, Advising, Development = the LEAD Center, UC Berkeley’s hub for leadership development, student involvement, and co-curricular advising – and it’s not just for undergrads.

For more than 150 graduate student organizations registered on CalLink, the LEAD Center offers administrative and advising support to all of them. Full-time staff professionals assist with anything from basic operations support (see below) to planning for leadership transitions and turnover, resolving conflicts among group members, and helping established organizations maximize their effectiveness via long-term strategic planning.

Shirley Giraldo, for one, would love to see more graduate student presence in the LEAD Center. As a LEAD Center Coordinator focused on graduate student organizations, her aim is to help create more connections for graduate students within and outside of their academic programs. “It seems like a small thing, but community is important for a student’s well-being and time at Cal,” she explained, adding that she wants to make the campus, and the LEAD Center, feel like a space for all students.

With that in mind, this fall the LEAD Center and a team of collaborators in the GA and Graduate Division launched the very first GradFest. The event followed the New Graduate Student Orientation, bringing together 300 incoming graduate students and over 35 campus resources and graduate student organizations.

In addition to supporting student organizations, the Center provides advising and consultation to the student government organizations: the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) and the Graduate Assembly (GA). For more information about getting involved, contact the LEAD Center.
