I’m thrilled that our new academic leaders bring a commitment to that strength, and to Berkeley’s public mission. On July 1, Carol T. Christ began her duties as Berkeley’s 11th (and first female) chancellor. Her first message to our community notes her forward-facing desire to position “Berkeley to be its best self—an extraordinary place to work and to learn.” Earlier this month, Paul Alivisatos, a professor of chemistry and the vice chancellor for research, was appointed to the pivotal role of Berkeley’s executive vice chancellor and provost. He will work closely with the chancellor and deans to play a key role in developing and implementing measures to strengthen Berkeley’s world-class educational experience and global impact. The coming year will be crucial as our new leaders craft plans that will, literally, determine Berkeley’s future. Our long history of shared governance makes it essential that our leaders hear your opinions on our future course. I encourage you to get involved at the level of your academic programs and more broadly through the Graduate Assembly.
