Welcome to the spring semester!  As a New Year’s resolution, I encourage you to check out the professional development activities offered by academic departments, administrative offices, and the Graduate Division. Now is a good time to learn about some career paths that you may not have considered – you may be surprised at the breadth of options.  And it’s never too early to master skills that will strengthen your career readiness and widen your employment options.

This monthly newsletter’s section on Professional Development — along with our website — bring you regularly updated information on workshops, conferences, and more.

I strongly encourage graduate students who are engaged in research to enter our third annual Grad Slam competition. This competition — which develops the skill of presenting your research concisely to a non-specialist audience — offers cash prizes and a chance to compete against your peers at the UC-wide competition later in the spring. The entry deadline is a month away — February 15 — so check out the details now!

With warm wishes for a productive semester,
