SURF SMART Graduate/Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program

Doctoral students from all departments and schools are invited to apply for the 2020 SURF SMART graduate/undergraduate research mentoring program, a collaboration of the Graduate Division and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarships.

The SURF SMART program will run from May 29 to August 7, 2020. This program enables up to 20 doctoral students to provide mentored research opportunities to undergraduate students. It is designed to broaden doctoral students’ professional development and to foster research skills and forge paths to advanced studies for UC Berkeley undergraduates.

Each graduate mentor, working under the guidance of a faculty adviser, will receive a summer stipend of $5,000 for approximately 200 hours of work; each undergraduate mentee will receive a summer stipend in the amount of $5,000 for approximately 320 hours of work.

Doctoral students selected as SURF SMART mentors must enroll in and successfully complete the one-unit course, Effective Mentoring in Higher Education (GSPDP 301), during spring semester 2020 (Tuesdays, 3:30-5 p.m.).

Informational meetings for graduate mentor applicants will be held on two dates this semester:

  • Wednesday, November 20, 2019, 3-4 p.m., 309 Sproul Hall; and
  • Tuesday, November 26, 2019, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., 309 Sproul Hall.

The deadline for graduate mentor applications is Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
