Starting in fall 2013, UC Berkeley will provide eligible graduate student researchers (GSRs) with financial assistance to help defray the costs of childcare. As many as one in ten graduate students are parents who juggle academic and family responsibilities. Childcare costs can pose a significant financial burden, which can affect students’ academic focus. Graduate student instructors (GSIs), tutors and readers are already eligible for a childcare reimbursement program administered by UC Berkeley’s Labor Relations Office. Next semester, students with a 25% or greater GSR appointment will be offered a grant to reimburse up to $900 childcare costs per semester. Graduate Division will bear the cost of this new program and administer the process.
