Foerster Lecture on the Immortality of the SoulIn 1928, Miss Edith Zweybruck established the Foerster Lectureship to honor the memory of her sister Agnes A. Foerster and her brother-in-law Constantine E. A. Foerster. Miss Zweybruck was a devoted public school teacher in San Francisco for many years. She worked in the earnest pursuit of her profession and cultivated a devoted circle of close friends. For Miss Zweybruck, teaching was an opportunity to develop knowledge and spiritual values in the minds of young people. She emphasized integrity of character, high ideals, and noble purposes to her pupils. It was always the soul of the child that was most important to her, and her own life exemplified the ideals she cherished and sought to inspire in her students. Miss Zweybruck’s sister, Agnes A. Foerster, shared her high ideals and beliefs concerning the true value of life. For this reason, Miss Zweybruck dedicated the lecture to her sister and brother-in-law, Constantine E.A. Foerster. Mr. Foerster was a law partner of Alexander F. Morrison, a prominent San Francisco attorney for whom the Morrison Memorial Library was named. Although Mr. Foerster passed away in 1898 at the age of 37, he was well established in the San Francisco Bar and considered one of its most able and highly respected members. He also exemplified Miss Zweybruck’s ideals by living a life of honesty, integrity, and high intellectual and moral purpose. He was very widely read, and had a large library of books on subjects ranging from art to philosophy and spirituality. Miss Zweybruck wanted the Foerster Lectures to reflect her deep interest in the spiritual side of life. She specified the lectureship to focus on the “Immortality of the Soul.” Miss Zweybruck believed that through the venue of a respected university and the words of scholarly lecturers, she might help shed new light on a subject that has interested the world for centuries.
